World’s first four-terminal flexible DC ring grid has been successfully networked

Last week, the ±500 kV Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid Test and Demonstration Project has been successfully networked at all four terminals.

As one of the key supporting projects for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, it will ensure that all the venues are 100% run by clean energy.

Indeed, the Zhangbei Flexible DC grid in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area will enable the integration of wind, solar and hydro energy from its different terminals in a transmission ring that will ensure the optimization of electricity flow: the Zhangbei and Kangbao converter stations are directly connected to large-scale clean energy generation as the sending end, the Fengning station is connected to the power grid and connected to the pumped storage hydro station as the regulating end, and the Beijing station is connected to the capital’s load center as the receiving end.

The total amount of green power provided by the Zhangbei Flexible DC Project can reach 14.1 TWh per year, which is equivalent to one-tenth of the annual electricity consumption in Beijing.

The project boasts "world number one" ranking on 12 achievements, including being the world’s first flexible DC power grid network. (State Grid News)
