News Summary:

  • NEA releases 2016 national solar plan
  • Dianxibei 800 kV UHV DC line construction begins
  • Binhaibei 100MW offshore receives grid connection
  • NEA promoting energy storage technology for ancillary services market

Solar: NEA Releases 2016 National Solar Plan
The NEA plans to construct 18.1 GW of solar in 2016.  Of the total, 12.6 GW will be distributed solar generation, and 5.5 GW will be large solar “bases” with tens to hundreds of MW of capacity. Cumulative installed capacity of solar PV was 41.6 GW in 2015, and will reach 60 GW at the end of 2016 if the NEA meets its goal. (NEA CN)
Construction in the gigawatts has been the mantra for the last five years, however, 2016 may very well be the final year of a large installed capacity push. The next phase of renewable energy in China will be the integration and utilization of renewable energy, which, so far, China is behind its peers in the rest of the world

Transmission: Dianxibei 800 kV UHV DC Line Construction Begins
The Dianxibei 800 kV UHV DC line from Yunnan to Guangdong province construction began. The specifications of the line are:

  • 1,959 km total distance
  • 5 GW power transmission capacity
  • 22.2 billion RMB investment

The transmission line is expected to be operational some time in 2017. (Xinhuan CN)
The new Yunnan-Guangdong line adds 20 TWh of additional annual power flow capacity to the Pearl River Delta region, decreasing the power shortages in Yunnan province. Yunnan province has a total installed capacity of 65.8 GW generation, including 6.3 GW wind, 12.6 GW thermal, and a massive 45.4 GW of hydro.

Storage: NEA Promoting Energy Storage in Ancillary Services Market
The NEA is strategically promoting energy storage technologies in the “Three North” area — Northeast, North, and Northwest. The NEA is proposing a trial of up to five energy storage facilities to participate in the ancillary services market. There is still no word on the financial reward mechanism for market participants.
